N7 Travel Time

In 2004, as part of the Streetwise project, the Elmore Group was awarded the contract by the National Roads Authority for the supply installation and commissioning of a system comprising 17 traffic monitoring stations, a microwave based communications network, Variable Message Signs and all associated civil and electrical works.

The system is based on a series of non-intrusive microwave based vehicle detectors, mounted on roadside poles at 500 metre intervals between Rathcoole and the M50 on the northbound carriageway of N7.  These detectors gather data such as; vehicle speed, traffic volume and lane occupancy from vehicles travelling on the N7 Northbound and send this data back to the NRA's Traffic Management System every 60 seconds.

The NRA's Traffic Management System for the project, known as ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management System) then applies an algorithm to the traffic data to calculate the current travel time.  The system sends this travel time information to electronic message signs, known as VMS on the N7. Furthermore the ATMS information is made available to the public through the NRA's N7 website
